Making amends for a round-robin loss, the Cambrian Golden Shield mixed doubles team of Taylor Cond and Hans Agnihotri secured third place, and, with it, OCAA bronze medals at the provincial championships this past weekend in London.

After finishing second at the east regional playdowns earlier this month at Collège Boréal, the local tandem posted a record of 2-3 in pool play at the OCAA competition, hosted by Fanshawe College.

The Shield team defeated pairings from Boréal – Bélanger/Brisson (21-11,21-10) and Fanshawe – Dominski/Frederick (21-12, 22-24, 21-11), but fell short in matches with Seneca – Chow/Nham (11-21, 18-21), Humber – Dong/Wong (4-21, 3-21) and Mohawk – Moslemi/Hall (11-21, 14-21).

The end result would be a fourth-place finish, matching Cond and Agnihotri against Humber for a second time. Though the scores were somewhat closer (8-21, 11-21), the Northern Ontario pairing (Cond is from Sault Ste Marie, Agnihotri from Sudbury) could not keep pace with the team that dominated en route to their gold medals.

Bouncing back from the loss, and not the least bit eager to return empty-handed, the Cambrian crew turned the tables on the Seneca duo, besting Chow/Nham 25-23, 21-16 in the rematch.

The mixed doubles team were the only representatives for Cambrian College at the 2015 OCAA championships, adding yet another badminton banner to the New Sudbury gymnasium.
