Kyla Bruni scored early in the three-on-three overtime session, lifting the Lo-Ellen Park Knights to a 5-4 win over the Bishop Carter Gators in Game 1 of the best of three Division B girls high school hockey finals Monday afternoon at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
Kennedy Roy, with a pair, Sydney Hall and Rebecca Gobbo rounded out the scoring for Lo-Ellen, while Melissa Martel (2), Amanda Savoie and Ashley Simard answered for the defending Division B champions.
In boys Division B action, the Espanola Spartans bolted to a 3-0 lead in the opening seven minutes, holding on for a 6-3 win over the Lasalle Lancers. Riley Nadeau and Martin Nashkawa scored two goals apiece to pace the Spartans attack, with Nick Cormier and Carson Nadeau adding one tally apiece.
Matt Tuttle, Miguel Lefebvre and Adam Hinds countered for Lasalle, who must now win back-to-back games in Espanola in order to claim the SDSSAA championship banner.
Both series resume this afternoon.
