Benoit's represents at 2015 Karate Canada nationals

A group of athletes from Benoit's Martial Arts attended the Karate Canada 2015 National Championships and Youth Cup in Richmond BC from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.

Disal Wickrasinghu, John Howard, Bradley Chaput and Marissa Meandro, all black belts, are part of team Ontario.

Wickrasinghu, a junior (16-17 year old) participated in the kata division and returned with a bronze medal.

Howard, a cadet (14-15 year old) was a finalist in both kata and kumite divisions.

Chaput lost only in his final round, and was awarded a silver medal in kata.

Meandro, (12-13 year old) was undefeated in her kata division. She returned with the National Youth Cup Champion title.

“Disal and Bradley with their top finishes have earned a spot on the Junior National team roster. They will attend other events in the next few months in order to earn points and maintain their position with the possibility of attending the Junior Pan Ams in Bulivia this coming August,” said a news release.

The team will consist of the top two from each division.

“Marissa is currently under age for the team roster, but is definitely a candidate for the following year.”

All four athletes will continue to train and prepare for numerous provincial, national and international events under the guidance of Shihan Don Benoit, Sensei Ian Boyne and Sensei Donna Benoit.
