For the second consecutive game, the Lady Wolves dominated the opposition, posting a 7-2 win over the Red Deer Chiefs on April 21st at the Esso Cup, the national midget AA girls hockey championship.

But where their 9-1 shellacking of the Moncton Rockets on Monday came at the expense of a team most aren't expecting a lot out of, yesterday's match was billed as a battle of the unbeaten.

In handing the Chiefs their first loss at the tournament, the two-time Ontario champions silenced the hometown crowd and once agin did it courtesy of a quick start.

Markers from Kailey Lapensee, Karli Shell, Tayler Murphy and Shell, with her second, sandwiched around a goal from Red Deer's Maddison Toppe, vaulted Sudbury to a 4-1 lead after just 20 minutes of play.

The second period belonged to Mélisa Kingsley, as the second-year forward recorded a natural hat-trick for the Lady Wolves, with Shell drawing a pair of assists for her linemate.

Surely using bench management to its full potential in the third, the Lady Wolves surrendered only a final tally to Mairead Bast, as netminder Danika Ranger turned aside 21 of the 23 shots she faced between the pipes for Sudbury.

The defending bronze medal winners at the midget nationals will try to keep rolling right along on today, facing the Manitoba champion Central Plains Capitals (1-1-0-1).

The real fun begins on April 24 with the semi-finals. Bronze and gold-medal encounters follow suit the next afternoon.
