U14 Impact boys hope practice means wins

It would take a win in their very last game of the season, but the Sudbury (GSSC) Impact U14 Boys managed to do just enough to avoid relegation, remaining in the Central Soccer League for at least one more year.

Kandyce Whitehead netted back-to-back hat tricks on the weekend as the Greater Sudbury Soccer Club Impact U21 Girls swept a two-game set from Mississauga PCC, beating the visitors 5-0 and 6-1.
It would take a win in their very last game of the season, but the Sudbury (GSSC) Impact U14 Boys managed to do just enough to avoid relegation, remaining in the Central Soccer League for at least one more year.

"We really tried our hardest in that game," said returning defender Andrew Prince with a smile.

The 2014 campaign provided an initial entry to the CSL for the 2001 lads under the direction of former Laurentian Voyageur Tony Tagliafierro. The experience created a learning environment for all involved with the team, players and coaches alike.

"Last year, I started off at mid, then our coach moved me to striker, then back to defense," said Prince. "At defense, I have a pretty good kick, so I get a chance to move the ball up."

Prince is also blessed with better than average size, creating a daunting challenge in the middle of the field for opposing attackers looking to create havoc.

Teammate Adam Szalai said he understands the flip side of that coin, having played striker for most of his soccer career. "You have to know how to do a one-on-one, and be able to find open spaces," noted Szalai.
"I usually go wide, because I'm pretty fast. Or I will do a 'one-two,' and then move over and send a through ball."

While the team held its own defensively, scoring remains the speedbump on the road to success, as it is with a number of the local entries competing on a provincial level.

Thankfully, with Tagliafierro at the helm, the Impact lads are absorbing the required lessons at a rapid pace.

"We learned a lot about positioning, and worked a lot on our skills,” he said. “Last year, when teams had pressure on us, we would sometimes fumble the ball."

The local crew get their first chance to put practice into play on the weekend of May 30-31, with East York and the Oshawa Kicks paying a visit to Sudbury.

The 2015 edition of the Impact U14 boys team includes Luc Couture, Cameron Boland, Riley Bruni, Jacob Socransky, Lucas oliveira, Jordan Pincivero, Connor Brooks, Adam Szalai, Andrew Prince, Austin Pawluk, Dario Beljo, Aidan Clarini, Luca Nardi, Sean Roberts, Daelin Henschel, head coach Tony Tagliafierro, assistant coach Giovanni Rocca and team manager Patti Socransky.
