While much of the local figure skating community have nestled into "off-season" mode, a few of the diehards are still on the ice.

A quartet of local athletes represented the Sudbury Skating Club (SSC) recently, as the young ladies got a head start on the fall competitive schedule, taking part in Minto Summer Skate 2014 in Ottawa.
While much of the local figure skating community have nestled into "off-season" mode, a few of the diehards are still on the ice.

Three members of the Sudbury Skating Club made the trek south the last weekend in April to compete at the Ursula Lehming Scarboro Skate April 24-26.

Part of an 11-entry field in the Junior Women division, Alyssa Murray enjoyed an outstanding short program, landing her first clean fully rotated double axel in competition, with no downgrades, and placing third behind a pair of ladies from the Richmond Training Centre.

Murray would come back to the pack slightly in the free skate, recording a mark of 52.68 (6th place) to go along with her score of 32.84 in the short.

Clubmate Madeline Baron was on the flipside of that coin, sliding into fourth place in a field of 10 with a score of 27.80, but jumping up another two notches with a very strong long program.

Her mark of 47.47 left Baron trailing on Michelle Lifshits of Thornhill in the free skate. A third Sudbury entry, Jillian Bushey, is gaining a boatload of helpful experience.

Competing at a "pre-novice" level in the fall, but moved to "novice" for the summer, in order to provide a greater challenge, Bushey showed some very encouraging signs, moving from 7th place in the short (22.18) up to 5th place in the free skate (41.75).

The locals will remain on the ice over the next few months, but are not back in competition until July and August, with the Minto Summer Skate and another in Thornhill scheduled prior to the fall.
