Alouettes have no love to share during city tennis finals

Day two of the SDSSAA Tennis Championships on May 14 produced two more banners for the Collège Notre-Dame Alouettes, with the CND crew taking four of the five titles that were up for grabs over the course of the week.

Held at the Indoor Tennis Centre, a big reason for the team's success was the fact that they received key contributions from each and every grade. Freshman Calin Ranger could not crack a singles roster that was loaded with seniors.

"I couldn't play singles, so I was looking for a partner," said Ranger. "Since Charles (de la Riva, his doubles partner) plays squash, he thought he would tryout for tennis."

The partnership worked to perfection, as Ranger and de la Riva downed Kevin Ranger and Liam Williamson of St Charles College 10-4 in the men's doubles final.

"Because Charles plays squash, he's used to holding the racquet a little bit higher, and he's used to doing slices," Ranger continued. "I taught him how to do ground strokes. It was hard at first, but he got a lot better and started understanding the game more."

While Ranger expects to take his shot at a city singles crown somewhere down the road, he said the move to doubles for his Grade 9 year was not all that difficult.

Rounding out the list of CND champions were the mixed doubles team of Lara Renzetti and Justin Preseault, who doubled schoolmates Gabrielle Huneault and Nicolas Venne 8-4 in the final.

In the ladies singles draw, Chantae Robinson of Marymount defended the banner she won initially in 2014, defeating Frankie McMahon, also of Marymount, 8-4.

Bronze medal winners on Thursday included Joel Savage and Jarrett Serre of St. Charles in men's doubles, Lianne Girard and Michel Ayotte of Horizon in mixed doubles, and Alexie Legault of Notre-Dame in ladies singles.
