GIRLSrun? Yes they do. And they're coming to Sudbury

"I am surprised, because when I first brought up the idea of having a girls running group, most teachers were thinking they might have five to 10 girls that are interested," Dagostino said. "It proves there is a need for this in the region."

The most exciting part, for Dagostino, is that fact that the FitSpirit program attempts to target young women who are not necessarily already active, as opposed to those who would already enjoy a strong athletic base from which to build.

"We are trying to promote positive self-esteem, and the completion of the program," she said. "That is the goal."

The endeavour benefitted from an early shot in the arm when Olympian and television broadcaster Tessa Bonhomme made a top in Sudbury to speak at a rally for the FitSpirit trainees.

"The girls were happy not only to meet Tessa, but also to find out that she was interested in what they were about to embark on," Dagostino said.

The Sudbury race is the first of the four-race series, with stops in Montreal, Gatineau and Mont-Tremblant later this year.
