Despite suffering a lopsided first loss of the season in the opening game of the Boyd Balkwill Memorial Tournament in Orillia earlier this month, the locals would gain redemption against the host team, capturing their second straight tournament with an overtime win in the gold medal game.

There was little to foreshadow the tournament victory as the Orillia Kings crowned the Rockhounds 7-1 in game one, with the Sudbury crew bouncing back to post a 6-5 win over the Halton Hills Bulldogs in their second encounter. Needing a big win to guarantee a berth in the finals, the northern squad quadrupled the Uxbridge Enforcers 8-2, setting up a rematch with Orillia.

It was looking very much like a repeat of the ice-breaker as the Kings jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead, before Cameron Walker got the Rockhounds on the board. The second period was all Sudbury, as goals from Max McCue and Aidan Teeter knotted the contest at 3-3, heading to period three.

With goaltenders at both ends matching one another with successive key saves, the contest would head to overtime.

With 5:22 remaining in the extra session, McCue took a pass from Walker and made no mistake, giving the Rockhounds a 4-3 win.

The Sudbury MVP would be awarded to netminder Cloé Douillette, with the balance of the Rockhounds roster as follows: Mason Lachance, Max McCue, Oliver Coté, Brandon Salem, Cameron Walker, Ethan Teeter, Ethan Marois, Zak Thompson, Aidan Teeter, Jared Eadie-Chartrand, Ben Harris and Sebastien Chartrand.

The team staff includes head coach Benoit Douillette, assistant coaches Jamie Teeter and Dave Lachance, trainer Kevin Chartrand and team manager Mark McCue.
