Boys U-13
Coach Aziz Almuwallad has his team playing some very good soccer at the moment. Competing in the Huronia District Soccer League, the GSSC (Greater Sudbury Soccer Club) Impact U-13 boys continue to match up well against the very best teams in their group.

A recent road trip would see the locals rack up a 5-1 victory over Barrie, as Ryan Teddy paced the attack with a two-goal effort. Rounding out the scoring for Sudbury were Robbie Castrechino, Massimo Cerilli and Ethan, on an impressive free kick from the side of the eighteen yard penalty area.

Much of the team's offensive charge was generated through the midfield, an area that was led by team captain Andrew Varghese. In game two, the Impact found themselves toe to toe against the first place Bradford Eagles.

Despite netting the only goal of the first half courtesy of Gregory, the locals were unable to hang on, dropping a 2-1 decision.

"It was tough game," noted Almuwallad. "The kids played hard, from their heart, to win that game. We put them under the pressure the last twelve minutes of the game."

The U-13 Impact lads will have a chance to redeem themselves this coming weekend, facing Barrie Blue on Saturday in Azilda (Lionel Lalonde Field), and then looking forward to a rematch with the Eagles Sunday at the same venue.

Men U-21

Also on the road, the GSSC Impact U21 Men welcomed striker Jesse Johnson back from injury.

Johnson scored in his first match back with the team, helping Sudbury blank the Whitby Iroquois 3-0.

Dexter St Jean and Shawn Wilcox rounded out the scoring, with Connor Vande Weghe recording the shutout.

In a battle of top-end U-21 teams, the Impact and FC Durham played to a scoreless draw on Sunday, with Evan Phillips racking up another clean sheet.

"We had a few golden opportunities to steal some points from them on the road, but we weren't clinical enough," noted head coach Ed Veilleux.

"Those are the first points we've dropped all season, and I'm extremely proud of my team."

While the return of Johnson is obviously good news for the team, the same cannot be said for defender Zach Gallo; the Laurentian Voyageur sophomore has shut it down until training camp due to a nagging leg injury.

Girls U-17

The GSSC Impact U-17 Girls remain solidly entrenched in the top half of the CGSL (Central Girls Soccer League) standings, after splitting a pair of games last weekend.

The girls were unbeaten with a record of 5-0-1 heading into a match with FC Toronto where they were downed on Saturday.

The northern ladies bounced back nicely the next day, posting a 5-1 win over the Oshawa Kicks.

The Impact trail only Toronto and Newmarket (5-0-0) in their eight-team grouping, and are back in action in two weeks time, hosting Newmarket on Saturday, July 18th.

Girls U-14

The U14 crew, meanwhile, suffered only their second loss of the season last Saturday on the road, losing by a count of 3-1 to Whitby.

Madison Laberge netted the only Sudbury goal. Scarborough United would pay the price the next day however, as the Impact regrouped to lay a 12-3 shellacking on their winless opponents.

Ariane Saumure enjoyed a five-goal outing in powering the Impact, with Laberge adding a hat-trick, and Bianca Toppazzini potting two of her own.

McKenna Cresswell and Jordin Rancourt closed off the offensive festivities for coach Marilyn Bodson and company.

The U14 White Division features a clear-cut seperation right down the middle, with East York, Whitby, King City and Sudbury all tied with ten points apiece, while Leaside, Vaughan and North Toronto lag far behind with just three.

The locals might well be padding their stats again this weekend, as Scarborough makes their one and only visit to Northern Ontario for a Saturday encounter at the Delki Dozzi Sports Complex.

Women U-21

The GSSC U-21 Women are enjoying a positive end to their season. After winning their division last summer, coach Dayna Corelli's troops were bumped up one division within the Ontario Women's Soccer League.

A general strengthening of their new grouping, combined with the loss of two to three key players, has made finding victories a difficult task.

The Impact had a very productive road trip last weekend, sweeping a pair of games from the West Rouge Storm, including an OWSL Cup matchup.

Sudbury trimmed West Rouge 3-2 in that affair, as Brianne Rodrigue scored twice, with Emily Hreljac adding a solo tally.

Carlee Parisotto paved the way on Sunday with a two-goal effort, as the Impact blanked the homeside 3-0.

Rodrigue also buried her fifth of the season, while keeper Megan Coutu walked off with her first clean sheet of the summer.

The team closes off their season later this month, hosting the Storm on July 25th at Delki Dozzi.
