The core benefits of gymnastics training as a foundation to the development of athletic abilities in a host of other sports has long been recognized.

Now, the good folks at the Sudbury GymZone are looking to expand the advantage that athletes might take into their 2015-2016 season, offering a week long program that focuses on both preparing the body, and understanding it.

From August 17 to 21 gymnastics coach Michelle Seanor will work with teens from a variety of sporting backgrounds, offering afternoon sessions (1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.) through the entire week.

"This is designed to help people improve all aspects of athletic performance," said Seanor. "Really, we are looking at speed, strength, power and agility. We will work with our conditioning cross-training equipment that we have here, that can help athletes excel in ways that are different from the sport-specific training they already get."

"We will be focusing mostly on core strength, stability through all of your body alignment, air space awareness, essentially just learning and understanding better how your body moves in free space," added Seanor.

Because one can only accomplish so much over a five-day span, Seanor believes that the takeaway knowledge might well provide the key to the entire program.

"Everyone right now is doing active warm-ups, active flexibility, which is what we teach and specialize in," she said.

"What they learn here, they can incorporate into their “pre-hab” exercises, those that are designed to prevent injuries, they can incorporate into their warm-ups or cool-downs. It will be beneficial, regardless of level."

And since September and October provide the starting point to a new season for hundreds of local athletes, the mid-August timing was considered logical.

"It’s a great way to get into better shape, or just dust off the cobwebs before you head into training for your own sport," said Seanor.

The twenty-hour offering is done at a total cost of $160, with the GymZone acceptings athletes ranging from twelve through to their late-teens. For further information, athletes or parents are asked to contact Michelle Seanor either by phone (705-920-1552), or by email at [email protected].
