The Cambrian College Golden Shield women’s soccer team solidified their hold on a playoff position, as the locals took to the road for the first time this fall.

Clarissa MacArthur scored twice on Saturday, as the Shield edged the Durham Lords 2-1, a very nice result on an “off-day”, especially given that the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Sudbury in their season openers.

“Although it wasn't our greatest performance, we battled to come from behind and pick up the three points,” said head coach Giuseppe Politi.

MacArthur was back on the scoreboard the next day, joined by Tiffany Johnson as the Cambrian ladies blanked the Fleming Knights 2-0.

Sudbury native Megan Coutu recorded the clean sheet, the second of her freshman season.

“After creating numerous chances to score, we finally broke through in the second half,” said Politi. “We should have put them away earlier. I thought we deserved the three points, but we need to be more clinical and decisive in the final third, especially in front of goal.”

With a record of 3-1-1, and a total of 10 points, the Golden Shield sit in third place in the OCAA East Division, trailing the Algonquin Thunder (18 pts) and St. Lawrence Vikings (12).

The Cambrian teams will take another shot at their “Community BBQ – Tailgate Party” this coming weekend, after their first attempt was scuttled due to a torrential downpour on Sept. 19 that eventually forced the cancellation of both soccer games scheduled for that date.

The Shield will welcome the Knights (0-5-0) in the back end of their home and home, Saturday at noon, while the Cambrian crew battles the Centennial Colts (1-5-0) on Sunday, also at noon.
