With 50 players registered, organizers said it was a record turnout for this year’s Sudbury Disc Golf Club Ace Race on Oct. 4.
The game is pretty straightforward. Over the course of two rounds, players earn points by hitting “aces” (traditionally known as a hole-in-one) and “metals” (hitting the target). Players are provided with two new discs to be used for the Ace Race, with only minutes to practice before the tournament. This makes for an even playing field, and for a day filled with experimentation and excitement.
With six aces and 19 metals, North Bay’s Mike McCubbin was the winner of this year’s tournament. He took home a new bag filled with discs, a coveted trophy disc and a cash prize.
“The casual atmosphere of the Ace Race makes it fun for both veteran and new players,” said Dean Aelick, club president. “I’m so proud to say that today’s attendance is almost double from last year.”
The Sudbury Disc Golf Club operates the Lions Club of Sudbury Disc Golf Course, located at the corner of Selkirk and Burton. This 18-hole course is free to play, and features a scenic hike through the neighboring woods.
The club hosts a weekly recreational league on Sundays at 1 p.m. (Tuesdays at 6 p.m. from May – August). Any interested players are encouraged to attend, and visit the Facebook page for more information.
The Ace Race is one of three yearly tournaments held by the club. The Blueberry Brawl is a competitive tournament held in July, while the Sud-brrrr-y Ice Bowl is a charity fundraiser held in February.
