Thanks to her marvelous running skills, Cambrian College Golden Shield cross-country athlete Emily Marcolini has become the first of the college students to earn a podium finish at the Canadian college championships.
The St. Benedict Catholic Secondary grad made her medal-winning run in Brockville over the weekend. Her bronze medal marks the first time a Cambrian student has won a medal at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association cross-country championships.
To win the bronze, Marcolini finished a five-kilometre course in 19:02 minutes, finishing within seconds of gold-medal winner Jessy Lacourse (CEGEP de Victoriaville), who finished the course in 18:33 minutes and silver winner Jamie Wigmore (Grande Prairie Regional College), who ran it in 18:43.
Besides winning bronze, Marcolini was also the highest-placing Ontario athlete at the event.
“I’m very proud of the way that Emily ran,” said Cambrian cross-country coach Eric Leishman in a news release. “She ran the way she thought she had to, by taking it out from the gun, to give her the best chance at a medal.”
On Oct. 3 in Sault Ste Marie, Marcolini became the seventh Cambrian women to claim gold at the OCAA Cross-Country Championships.
