The two-horse race in the Minor Bantam division of the NOHL (Northern Ontario "AAA" Hockey League) continues, and the Nickel City Sons were not about to lose ground.

Facing the winless Soo Thunder, the Sons completed a three-game sweep over the weekend at the I.J. Coady Memorial Arena in Levack, pulling one victory out of the fire, while cruising in the two remaining encounters.

The first matchup was no contest as Nickel City scored six times in the second period, silencing the Thunder 9-2. Hunter Brazier enjoyed a five-point performance that included a hat-trick, leading the way for the winners.

Deric Charbonneau, Giordano Biondi, Dario Beljo, Justin Dauphinais, Gavin Brown and Caleb Rainville rounded out the scoring for the Sons, with Nick Niro and Justin Mauro both taking advantage of Sault Ste Marie power play opportunities to put the visitors on the board.

The Thunder threw a scare at the Sons in game two, holding a 4-3 lead late before a five on three allowed Nickel City the chance to net both the game-tying and game-winning goals, edging the Soo 5-4.

Charbonneau and Biondi scored twice each for Nickel City, with Dauphinais adding the other marker, while Colton Smithers, Niro, Mauro and David Campbell responded in a losing cause.

The weekend finale fell somewhere between the first two games, as the Sons spotted the Thunder a 1-0 first period lead, but rallied in scoring three times in both the second and third periods, doubling the Sooites 6-3.

Brown potted a pair of goals to show the way for the Sons, joined on the scoresheet by Nick Faught, Dauphinais, Charbonneau and Kurtis Wennerstrom. Mauro drilled home his third goal in as many games, while Ty Zachary and Campbell also buried one each.

With a record of 9-2-0, coach Rod Mackenzie and the Sons return to action this weekend at home, hosting the North Bay Trappers for a three game set in Chelmsford and Hanmer.

The Trappers currently trail their Nickel City rivals by six points, boasting a season mark of 6-2-0, and would need a sweep in order to knot things up at the top of the league standings.

The Nickel City Major Bantam Sons are also at home this coming weekend, welcoming the Timmins Eagles to town for games on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon in Levack.
