After coming close to hitting the win column in their last two weeks, the Laurentian Voyageurs men's basketball team finally turned the trick on the road last weekend.

A 33-point outburst in the third quarter saw the visiting Voyageurs overcome a 37-30 half-time deficit, holding on through the final 10 minutes and downing the Guelph Gryphons 83-79.

This after home setbacks of 69-68 to the Queen's Gaels, and 99-96, in overtime, to the York Lions the previous weekend. David Aromolaran enjoyed a season-high 29-point performance in leading LU to victory, with Sam Hirst (17) and Anthony Iacoe (14) also hitting double digits.

Daniel Dooley (20), Taylor Boers (16), Ahmed Haroon (13) and Drew Walford (11) were all featured, at various times, as part of a balanced Guelph attack.

Though the Gryphons out-rebounded the Voyageurs 37-32, a near 50-per-cent accuracy (46.7 per cent) from beyond the three-point arc helped keep Coach Shawn Swords' men close, from start to finish.

Hirst led Laurentian with nine rebounds, with Lex Van Iperen adding eight in 24 minutes of playing time, coming off the bench.

Despite having to make the flight from Toronto to Thunder Bay to face the Lakehead Thunderwolves the next evening, the road warriors from Sudbury started well enough, building up leads of 20-18 and 36-32 through the opening two quarters of play.

The homeside rallied over the final 20 minutes, as Laurentian fell to 1-5 on the season, with Lakehead climbing back to .500 at 3-3. Hirst (19 pts) and Aromolaran (18) were again near the top of the scoring parade, with Nick Simon netting an even dozen in a losing cause as well.

The local lads will try and wrap up the first half of their 2015-2016 schedule on a winning note, welcoming the winless Algoma Thunderbirds to the Ben Avery Gym this Saturday night for an 8 p.m. tip-off.

The Laurentian ladies (1-5) will kick things off, also facing Algoma (0-6), beginning at 6 p.m.
