An afternoon swoon offset a great start to the day, as the Northern Chill U16 Girls finished seventh in a pool of nine teams at their season-opening Provincial Cup – Championship Central East tournament last Saturday in Thornhill.

Positivity reigned out of the gate as the Chill swept past the Barrie Elites 25-22, 25-21, this despite the fact the Sudbury squad was ranked ninth heading into the showdown, with the Elites sitting third in the seedings.

The Chill continued to push, even while suffering their first loss, falling in three sets to the Phoenix Heat (Toronto), 18-25, 25-15, 5-15.

Facing the Leaside Lightning in their cross-over game, the local ladies came up a little short, defeated by scores of 24-26, 16-25.

Unfortunately, the team could not reverse the trend in their final outing, as the Etobicoke Titans upended the Chill 25-16, 25-22.

“We had a great morning, but unfortunately, we did not continue with that intensity into the afternoon,” said head coach Joanna Castonguay.

The U16 crew will now prepare for Challenge Cup competition on the weekend of Dec. 19.
