The Laurentian Voyageurs women's hockey team may not have held on for the win, but in an environment where points are all too precious in attempting to secure a program-first playoff berth, the team will gladly take one from the top seeded team in the country.

Facing the Guelph Gryphons in their only game last weekend, the Voyageurs were staked to a 1-0 lead after forty minutes of play thanks to a power-play goal from Ellery Veerman early in the middle stanza.

Topping the OUA standings with a record of 8-2-2-0, the Gryphons proved why they are among the Ontario elite, countering quickly in the third, as Kelly Gribbons and Leigh Shilton both pulled the trigger inside of the five minute mark.

But a resilient L.U. crew continued to battle, pulling even at 11:57 of the frame, with Rayside-Balfour product Julie Hébert netting the tally that would send the contest to overtime.

Shilton ended the drama at 2:24 of the extra session, burying her second goal of the game, as Guelph outshot Laurentian 27-22. Holding down the eighth and final playoff slot with a mark of 3-2-4-2 (15 pts), the Voyageurs close out the first half of the 2015-16 schedule this weekend in Toronto.

The Voyageurs took on basement-dwelling Ryerson on Friday, but Saturday presents a stiffer test as the University of Toronto Blues provide the opposition, sitting fifth at 5-2-1-2 for 21 points.

Laurentian currently trails the Laurier Golden Hawks by just one point, and are three back of the Nipissing Lakers.
