The Sudbury Synchro Swim Club (SSSC) is all about the amazing race.
The local crew was featured when the well-known TV show (The Amazing Race Canada) included a session of synchronized swimming as part of the Sudbury edition of the program, which aired back in August.
But now that the competitive season has begun, the SSSC are pursuing a race of a different kind, looking to close the gap on many of the more well-established clubs across the province.
Based on the results from the Lisa Alexander East Meet last weekend, the Sudbury crew are well on their way to their final destination.
Led by a fourth place finish by Georgia Speck (fourth among 148 competitors) in the age 13-15 division, head coach Lindsay Wandziak and the Sudbury Synchro team posted some impressive highlights in Nepean.
The entire quartet of local swimmers in the Age 11-12 category placed in the top half of the field, including Amy Lacelle (15th) and Madison Hood (20th). The 13-15 grouping did one better, sending six athletes to the event, all of whom cracked the top-50.
The largest contingent from this neck of the woods came in the youngest of the age brackets, with ten young Sudburians among the 129 swimmer field that comprised the age 10 and under classification.
Perhaps even more meaningful for the Sudbury Synchro Swim Club was the fact that it was awarded the Mya Gerow Award for finishing as the top fundraising club in the Burning Bright Breast Cancer Campaign.
The venture is near and dear to many of the parents in this area, with the award named in honour of a swimmer parent, from Sudbury, who lost succumbed to her battle with breast cancer a few years back.
