OVENS, James Jeremiah - 1945-2012 - We are very sad to announce the passing of our dear Jim after a short and courageous battle with cancer on January 25, 2012, age 66 years. Beloved son of John “Jerry“(predeceased) and Isabel. Cherished husband of Julianna, devoted and loving father of Julian (Jacqueline) and Paul. Proud grandfather of Gabrielle. Much loved brother of Patrick(Joanne), John, Gloria, and Suzzi and devoted uncle to Kathleen (Aaron), David (Kristina), Jackie( Daniel), Sean, Daniel (predeceased) and Robin (predeceased). Also mourned by his uncle Wesley (Beatrice) and sister-in-law Raquel, predeceased by her husband Michael. A son of Northern Ontario, Jim was born in Copper Cliff ( now part of Sudbury) where his grandparents settled in the nineteenth century. He was a passionate Canadian, well-versed in Canadian history, politics and literature. Jim was a proponent for a strong, progressive and ethical future for Canada, inspired by such diverse, great Canadians as Jean Vanier and Wilfred Laurier. Jim will be proudly remembered and always loved by family and friends as a man with a deep Catholic faith. His volunteer and charity work, whether on the Board of Catholic Family Services or helping parishioners and others hrough his dedication to the Blessed Sacrament parish was an inspiration to family and friends. Through the Church's Social Action Committee, Jim worked tirelessly to assist refugees, immigrants, and the needy of Ottawa. Although he worked in politics for many years, perhaps his greatest accomplishment was the range of people he successfully influenced with his integrity and his profound Canadian liberal values of fairness and social justice. A special thank you to the many healthcare providers, especially in Oncology at the General campus of the Ottawa hospital, for their support through this difficult time. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of HULSE, PLAYFAIR & McGARRY, 315 McLeod St. (at O'Connor) on Sunday Jan 29th, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held in Blessed Sacrament Church 194 Fourth Ave, on Monday Jan 30th, at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vincent de Paul or Catholic Family Services.
