SHELBY, Walter - In Loving Memory of Walter Shelby M. Ed., 1927-2012 Who passed away at the age of 85 years on September 30th, 2012. Beloved husband of Mary (Cevraini) his loving wife and best friend. Dear son of Alex Sherstobitoff and Wasilisa (Markin) both predeceased. Also predeceased by brother Peter, sister Lucy Tymchuk, and nephew John Tymchuk (wife Ann). Survived by two nieces Wanda (Bill Lukan), Stella (Earl Kent) and nephew Denis Tymchuk (Christine), sisters-in-law, Cora, Delores, Vana and brother-in-law Arme. He will be long remembered by his relatives and friends. Walter was born in Copper Cliff and at the age of 3 moved to Sudbury. He attended Central Public School and graduated from Sudbury Mining and Technical School. Besides being a first- class scholar Walter was also a versatile athlete. In secondary school he excelled in basketball, football, track and field, was a member of the swimming team and played hockey and softball. He carried this tradition into university where he played varsity basketball, football and track and field. Walter maintained his interest in sports and in 1960-61 he became playing coach of the Laurentian University basketball team which won the Northern Ontario championship. Walter decided on a teaching career in 1956. Throughout his entire career he was a Principal with the Sudbury Board of Education working at Naughton P.S., Valley View P.S., Ridgemount P.S. and Queen Elizabeth II P.S. from which he retired in 1986. He strove to assist many young people achieve goals which they thought were beyond their reach. Walter was respected by his peers and administrators. He was a lifetime member of N.O.P.S. Association. In his later years Walter was an avid golfer, curler and very active in dancing. He was a member of the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club, Caruso Golden Age Club and an Associate member of Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 76). Walter was sociable and was known to have a sense of humour. He enjoyed the companionship of people and enjoyed life “completely“. At Walter's request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Internment will take place at a later date. Donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Extendicare-York Residents Activity Fund. I have very fond memories of Mr. Shelby from Ridgemount Public School. He was always firm but fair with students. He was a genuine caring educator,my deepest condolences to his family.
so sorry to hear the loss of such a good man.I have memories of Mr Shelby when i was very young and he was the principal of VALLEY VIEW PUBLIC SCHOOL.He tought my husband in grade 8 too and also helped him in gymnastics and basketball.Sounds like Mr.Shelby had a wonderful life and for that I am happy
