A 19-year-old G2 driver handed over two baggies containing marijuana during a Greater Sudbury Police Service RIDE check on Dec. 26.

The driver was observed in Hanmer. The driver entered the area where police had set up their spot check. Upon seeing the police, the driver circled the parking lot and left in a “suspicious” manner, according to a police report.

Police stopped the vehicle, and officers noted the odour or marijuana.

The driver was charged and given an court date to answer to the charges. The parent who was the registered owner of the vehicle attended the scene and took possession of the family vehicle.

In Lively, an 18-year-old driver was charged for going 8o km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Again, officers noted the smell of marijuana. The driver and two occupants admitted to having smoked drugs earlier.

As a result, the parent who was the registered owner of the vehicle was contacted and attended the scene to take possession of the family vehicle. The driver was charged with speeding.

A total of 43 drivers were checked in Hanmer at Elmview Drive near the Hanmer Mall, and 83 drivers were checked in Lively for a total of 127 drivers checked overall.

The Festive RIDE Program is aimed at reducing property damage, injuries and death caused by impaired driving. RIDE checks are intended to target high-incident/high-complaint areas.
